The Crab Nebula (catalog designations M1, NGC 1952, Taurus A) is a supernova remnant and pulsar wind nebula in the constellation of Taurus.
Located at a distance of about 6,500 light-years (ly) (2 kiloparsec (kpc)) from Earth, the nebula has a diameter of 11 ly (3.4 pc).
The Crab Nebula is the remnant of a supernova explosion that was observed by Chinese astronomers in the year 1054. The nebula is still expanding at a rate of about 1,500 kilometers per second and is visible in telescopes as a glowing cloud of gas and dust
